Critical Problem: Costa Rica has become a global leader in clean electricity production, generating nearly all of its power from renewable sources like hydro, geothermal, wind, and solar. However, much of the nation’s overall energy use, especially in the transportation sector, still depends heavily on fossil fuels, making transport one of the largest contributors to CO₂ emissions.

Current Reality: Despite abundant renewable electricity, oil and other fossil fuels continue to dominate transportation energy consumption in the country. This reliance limits progress toward full decarbonization and keeps emissions high, particularly from private and tourism-related travel.

Tourism at Risk: Because Costa Rica’s tourism success is rooted in its natural beauty and ecological reputation, moving away from polluting transport technologies is essential. Greater adoption of clean, low-emission mobility helps protect ecosystems and wildlife, preserves landscapes for future generations, and reinforces Costa Rica’s role as a sustainability leader.
